THE Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday questioned Nalini, wife of former union minister Palaniappan Chidambaram in connection with the multi-crore Saradha chit-fund scam. Chennai-based senior lawyer Nalini was dragged after Sudipta Sen, the disgraced chairman of the busted chit fund, claimed he paid more than Rs 1 crore to her at the instance of Manoranjana Singh, the estranged wife of Congress leader Matang Singh.

According to media reports, in an 18-page letter to CBI, the Saradha boss alleged that he paid for Nalini Chidambaram’s visits to Kolkata and for her stays in a five-star hotel. He went on to add that Nalini pressured him to invest Rs 42 crore in Manoranjana’s company without assessing his financial strength.

Nalini is the latest to join the list of prominent names which have been questioned by the CBI in the scam.

West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) Raja Sabha MP, Srinjoy Bose, was also summoned and questioned by the CBI. TMC’s Rajat Majumdar who was retired from police service had worked as a security advisor for the tainted Saradha Group.
