There is very good news for Ulhasnagar residents. The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the bail plea of gangster turned politician Suresh Budhermal Kalani alias Pappu. A trial court in Kalyan had last November convicted Kalani to life imprisonment in murder of BJP activist Inder Bhatija.
Kalani, the self-claimed leader of Sindhi community had moved the Bombay High Court seeking bail and suspension of sentence. The High Court on March 7 admitted his appeal, suspended his sentence and granted bail. The Maharashtra state government opposed Kalani’s bail plea in the high court, rushed to the Supreme Court in appeal when it lost.
63-year-old Kalani had been convicted for murder and conspiracy to kill. Also there are several criminal cases pending against him.
Inder Bhatija was shot dead in April 1990 by Kalani’s shooters. Two months after Inder’s brother Ghanshyam was also gunned down. Bhatija brothers were backing to BJP candidate Sheetaldas Harchandani in assembly election and Kalani was also contesting on Congress ticket.
