THIRTEEN government school teachers, including five women, were killed in a road accident near Chandipur village in Punjab on Friday morning. The vehicle they were travelling in collided with a truck.
According to media reports, the accident took place at 8.15am near Chandmajri village on the Fazilka-Ferozepur highway, about 320 kms from here. The accident occurred when driver of the van was trying to overtake a vehicle and suddenly found a truck emerging from fog. It was head on collision. The vehicle has been completely damaged in the accident.

The van was hired for daily transportation by the teachers deployed in different government schools of Fazilka district. The victims included women teachers and a few new joinees. Most of the victims were teachers in government schools who were travelling to their institutions for work.
Those killed have been identified as Sanjiv Bagla (Shatirwala village near Fazilka), Shankar Lal (Fazilka), Manohar Lal (Abohar), Ram Pal (Abohar), Satinderjit Singh (Fazilka) Ashish (Faizlika), Nazam (Killianwali), Sanjeev Kumar, Bindia (Abohar), Tejinder Kaur (Fazilka), Shetal Kakkar (Fazilka), Natasha (Balluana) and Kiran Bala (Fazilka). Gopi Chand, who was injured critically, was shifted to a hospital at Abohar.

There were 15 teachers in the vehicle who belonged to the Fazilka and Abohar belt of southwest Punjab, a police official said.

The police said the truck driver and cleaner were absconding.
