INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday shared his thoughts on the Uri attack and other issues in his ‘Mann ki Baat’ programme on All India Radio. Modi said his government’s cleanliness drive has been a great success in the past two years during which nearly 2.5 crore toilets were constructed in a bid to make India free of open defecation.

“I started Swachh Bharat campaign two years back on the occasion of Bapu Jayanti (Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary). With the help of this campaign, awareness about cleanliness among 125 crore people of the country has increased,” Modi said. “We built 2.48 crore toilets in the rural areas in these two years and 1.5 crore more toilets will be constructed in the next year,” he said.

The Prime Minister also launched a toll-free ‘Swachh’ helpline 1969 for the people to know about the progress of the cleanliness drive.

Modi on Sunday paid tribute to the 18 soldiers killed in a militant attack on an Army base in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir. The prime minister further said that the security of Kashmir was the responsibility of the administration, which was taking steps to ensure the same. Modi said the country had faith in its armed forces and that those responsible for the attack will be punished.
