THESE DAYS a person named Himesh Vasani has become the talking point in his housing society. Vasani, who would proudly introduce himself as the vastly experienced Chartered Accountant (CA) for the Rs 80,000 crore Reliance company, submitted a shoddy and greatly incorrect report in his own society. As a result, Vasani was forced to resign. “Agar Vasani ek housing society ki report proper nahin bana paye to wo Reliance ki kya halat karte honge. Bhagwan hi malik hai,” said a resident, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Vasani is a resident of Gundecha Premiere Co-operative Housing Society Ltd and the CA of Reliance, a company owned by Mukesh Ambani. He always portrays himself as a great CA since he is associated with Reliance company. Seeing this ‘qualification’ of his, society committee members elected him Treasurer in the society in January this year. Last week, Vasani submitted the reports for three months, and when the society members saw what he had done, they were shocked. The report was incorrect by a great degree. Committee members called an annual general meeting (AGM) in which they refused to accept the report. 32 mistakes were pointed out by flat owners in accounts spanning only two months. Some of the mistakes were as glaring as interchange of ‘To’ and ‘By.’ Interestingly these kinds of accounts/reports were stamped and certified by auditor Mrs Smita P. Mote without even going through it.

Thus the system of audit in Co-operative housing societies is just a smoke screen, where it is assumed that anything will be accepted. But thanks to diligent owners, in some societies like here these frauds are exposed. Vasani also insulted few persons even in front of committee members in order to subdue them. He even pledged to teach lessons to such deviant owners who point out errors. Once Vasani called one lady (flat owner) ‘Tum building ki Gandagi Ho.” When the lady decided to go to police then Vasani apologized.

Gundecha had taken maintenance charges in advance for 18 months but handed over the society in two months. He returned around Rs 2.25 crore (advance maintenance charges) in many installments to the society but Vasani failed to show the entry in the report and those being payable were not entered into the accounts.

“Vasani hamesha ye baat very proudly batate hain ki woh Rs 80,000 crore ke turnover wali Reliance company ke CA hain. Lekin woh ek chhoti si society ki report theek se bana nahin paye,” said another flat owner.

At last Vasani resigned from the post of Treasurer, alleging dirty politics in the society. The resignation copy is with ABI.
Gundecha Premiere Co-operative Housing Society is in Thakur Village, Kandivali East, and is constructed by Ashok Gundecha, the owner of Sea Princess Reality. There are 116 flats in the society, in which Gundecha has reserved six flats for own use. More than two dozen CAs own a flat in the society and three CAs are in the society committee.

Gundecha gave possession three years late. While Gundecha’s representative Jeetu Bhai was handing over the society few members raised the question of getting possession three years late and violated the parking norms as per approved plan by Traffic police, Fire and BMC. Himesh Vasani here too interrupted them and suggested they should not ask questions about late possession. Also, on second parking issue, Jeetu Bhai assured all that second parking will be handed over to the society and the committee will decide on it. ABI heard that joint secretary Avdhesh Gupta claims that he bought second parking for Rs 10 lakh from the builder but failed to produce a receipt.

Despite repeated attempts Himesh Vasani and Reliance spokesperson were not available for comment. They not replied our queries sent via email. Reliance spokesperson’s mobile phone and landline were not working.

In Residential Societies, ultimate vigilance is to be kept by Owners themselves. For this most forward thinking Societies are adapting Online Tools like ApartmentADDA that keeps Society Billing and Accounting online and available to Residents at all times. If each Resident has access to their Account Statement LIVE, they can raise alert on the first anomaly they see using the Online forum or helpdesk, and such disasters at end of year can be avoided.

Dear Anonymous,

Please provide your name and details to verify that you are not speaking on behalf of Mr Vasani or Mr Vasani himself.

What is reported in the article is the true fact of most societies.
