A series of events were organized by the Army at Mumbai as part of the 69th Army Day celebrations. As a part of the celebrations, Mini Marathons of 10 km and a 6 km were organised at Colaba Military Station, for serving personnel, ladies and children this morning. Over 300 personnel from the three Services including their families and children participated enthusiastically in the event. The marathon was flagged off by Major General Rajiv Edwards, General Officer Commanding, Uttar Maharashtra & Gujarat Sub Area.

The youngest runner at the event was Master Tushar Kamble, aged 8 years and the oldest runner was Honorary Captain Attar Singh Takshak, aged 75 years, both of whom completed the 6 km run. Gunner Neeraj Kumar, Gunner Gurjit Singh and Recruit Shiv Shankar Pal (under 40 years) and Commander SK Handa, Subedar Daljit Singh and MCPO KN Singh (over 40 years) were placed first, second and third respectively in the 10 km run, in their categories. Sepoy Gurdeep Singh, Mrs Ritu Sahu, and Master Mahendra Singh were the winners of the gents, ladies and children’s categories respectively in the 6 km event.

Army Day events commenced on 15 Jan 17, with a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the newly constructed Late Major RR Rane, PVC, Memorial Park followed by a Sainik Sammelan which was addressed by Major General Anuj Mathur, Officiating General Officer Commanding, Maharashtra Gujarat & Goa Area.

A Band & Equipment Display was also organised for college students of South Mumbai at St Xavier’s College on 17 Jan 2017, wherein the Pipe Bands of the Mechanized Infantry Regimental Centre and 7 SIKH entertained the spectators with martial tunes and other soulful melodies. The NSG also put up a Weapons and Equipment display to acquaint the students with their weapons and operational capabilities. These displays were witnessed by over 3000 students from over 15 colleges of Mumbai. This was followed by an interactive session wherein the role and contributions of the Indian Army towards nation building were highlighted.
