Ganesh Baburao Kamble

THE Mahatma Phule police station in Kalyan (West) has shamed the force time and time again. Its latest shameful act is of doing nothing to bring to justice in which an auto rickshaw driver tried to set a woman on fire on the road and thrashed the eyewitness. The incident took place around 12.45am on December 25, 2016, in front of Sridevi Hotel, Murbad Road, Kalyan (West).

Ganesh Baburao Kamble (50) has been working in Sridevi Hotel for years. On the day of the incident he was sitting in the hotel passage after finishing his duty. He saw a woman wearing a Punjabi dress enter the hotel passage crying BACHAO–BACHAO. Kamble rushed to the woman. He asked her what the matter was. She said that an auto rickshaw driver wanted to kill her. Just then, a person appeared in an auto rickshaw. He started thrashing the woman. He threw the woman inside the auto rickshaw and thrashed her. He snatched a matchbox from Kamble’s hand, lit a cigarette and tried to set the woman blaze. Kamble tried to save her. The auto rickshaw driver thrashed Kamble too.

While the auto rickshaw driver was thrashing Kamble, the woman fled in another auto rickshaw. Angry, the auto rickshaw driver again thrashed Kamble, resulting in a fractured toe. Kamble remembered the auto rickshaw number as 7775 only.

“I tried to save the woman but the auto rickshaw driver attacked me. I approached Mahatma Phule police station but the police are not ready to listen properly to me,” said Kamble.

Next morning Kamble discussed the matter with his employer, owner of Sridevi Hotel Arun Shetty, and approached the Mahatma Phule police station. He himself received medical treatment. Arun Shetty also informed the police that a person who was the suspected auto rickshaw driver was present in front of the hotel but the police showed no interest in arresting him.

On January 11, 2017, Kamble again complained (copy with ABI) in writing but the police have no interest in cracking the case. They did not even register Kamble’s FIR.

“I suspect the Mahatma Phule police picked up the auto rickshaw driver on the basis of description provided by me, but they have allowed him to go scot-free after taking a huge bribe,” said Kamble.
