Dear Friend,

PRESIDENT, Trump’s attacks on the media have become more and more dangerous. His denouncement of media outlets such as CNN, NBC, ABC and The New York Times have become a familiar part of his daily rhetoric. However, last week’s press conference was particularly combative towards the media. President Trump repeatedly questioned the integrity of the mainstream media, calling them “dishonest” and “fake news,” and later tweeted that the “fake news…is the enemy of the American people!” He cut off journalists throughout the conference and at one point only took questions from those he deemed “friendly reporters.” You can read more about it here.

These words do not come without consequence — President Trump may have already set a dangerous precedent for media freedom in other countries. Six journalists charged with “publishing false news” were detained in Ivory Coast last week. They were released from jail on February 14th, but their charges remain.

President Trump should understand just how serious his allegations against the media are. As the President of the United States, he holds a position of influence unlike anyone else. Journalists have an obligation to report what goes on in the White House in order to maintain democracy and bipartisanship within American society. Our country cannot be free without a free press.
