THE Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Centre and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) directing them to provide reservations for acid attack victims under Person with Disability quota (PWD).

An acid attack survivor moved to the Delhi High Court after an advertisement was issued by AIIMS on June 13, calling for applications for the post of ‘nursing officer grade B’, with 32 seats reserved for persons with disability. However, the kind of disability eligible for applying to the post was ‘OL — one leg disability’.

The acid attack survivor filed the case in the court seeking reservation for victims of acid attack for the ‘post of nursing officer grade B’ at the AIIMS since the government, in 2016, had directed to include acid attack survivors in the disabled category.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has directed all the central government departments to reserve 1% of each post for acid attack survivors and people having low vision, deaf and hard of hearing. According to the new rules and regulations announced by the government, every organization of the government will be having grievance redressal officer for handling the issues. The officer is required to maintain a proper record of the complaints and its date of disposal.

Every complaint registered has to be inquired and acted upon within a period of two months and communicated to the complainant with the disability at the earliest.
