SUNIL Dashrath Singh, Sub-Engineer, S – ward, maintenance department, Brihannmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was convicted by the court for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe.

The complainant would take contracts for the maintenance of fire cable, power cable, etc. from various companies. The complainant approached accused Sunil Singh requesting him to grant permission for digging up a hole, near the bridge at Gandhinagar, L. B. S. Marg, Kanjurmarg, to clear a cable fault. The accused Singh demanded a bribe of Rs. 1, 50,000 from the complainant for allowing him to join a cable of 300 meters, but sealed the deal at Rs. 50,000.

The complainant approached Anti – Corruption Bureau (ACB), Mumbai and registered a complaint against Singh. On the basis of the complaint the ACB set a trap and arrested Singh accepting the bribe amount.

After the completion of the investigation, the ACB filed a chargesheet in the special court against Singh. On June 11, 2014 in the Sessions court, after the charges on Singh were proved, Special Judge Lovekar, convicted Singh in the matter. Singh has been convicted under Section 7 of the IPC, 1988, for rigorous imprisonment of one year with a fine of Rs. 5,000, if not paid then an imprisonment of 3 months and Sections 13(1)(D) and 13(2) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, for rigorous imprisonment or two years with a fine of Rs. 10,000, if not paid then an imprisonment of six months.
