SHAMELESS! A police sub-inspector (PSI) was found guarding a cricket betting den at Malad at the time when police officials busted the racket.
According to sources PSI (yet to be identify) is attached to Kurar police station, Malad.
The Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria received the tip that the top bookies of Mumbai like Jayanti Jain alias Jayanti Malad, Amrish Thakkar and Kishor Soni alias Pluto were betting on India-Australia cricket match and also KFC. Maria who has lost faith on Social Service Branch (SSB) formed a special team headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Zone-9 Satyanarayan Chaudhary in supervision of Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Dhananjay Kamalakar.
As per the plan, the special team first sent two informants to verify the betting racket. As the informants tried to enter inside the Atlanta building a Police Sub-Inspector interrupted them questioning where they were going. The PSI was in uniform. One of the informants snatched the mobile phone of PSI to probe his link with the bookies but he smelt something fishy and managed to escape.
Speaking to ABI (abinet.org) a police official who was part of the team confirmed the presence of a PSI on the spot.
On Saturday at around 4am, special team raided flat number -904, 9th floor, Atlanta building in Malad. Police seized Rs. 15 lakh cash, US dollars, 13 kilogram silver, 50 mobile phone, 15 landline phones, LCD screens and laptops from the spot. Police also seized two ‘decortors’ from the spot.
Police arrested three accused. One of the accused identified as Rupesh Jain, the son of absconding bookie Jayanti Malad. The accused have been remanded under police custody for five days.
“We have arrested three accused, including the son of Jayanti Malad. The accused were accepting bets from Pakistan too,” said Chaudhary.
During investigations, arrested accused revealed that they were accepting bets from Pakistan, Dubai, Australia and other countries. They had connected seven lines to Pakistan only.
The stringent MCOCA can be applied once the network of the betting syndicate is established, especially since the investigation is pointing towards links in Pakistan and Dubai.
