In an unpopular and unexpected decision Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) government on Friday announced the hike in railway passenger fare as well freight fare. The railway passenger fare increased by 14.2 percent in all classes while freight charge was hiked by 6.5 percent with effect from today.

Recently in Goa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that some strong decisions are likely to be made soon. Sources said, the discussion about fare hike has been going on between Railway Minster Sadanand Gowda and Modi. Gowda had also met Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman for discussing the FDI in railways.

Speaking to media the railway minister has already given indications about increasing of passenger fare hike. However, the rail budget is likely to be presented in the second week of July.

Gowda had told reporters “We are discussing the matter and within three-four days, we will come to a conclusion on passenger fare hike.”
