THE Service Tax, Mumbai-I Commissionerate has arrested Myron John Remedios, the director of M/S.Rare hospitality and services private limited on Tuesday for alleged tax evasion.

According to Sushil Solanki, Commissioner, Service Tax, the said Company is engaged in providing cleaning and manpower recruitment and supply services. The company is providing housekeeping services to major hospitals, hotels and corporate clients. They have been collecting service tax from their clients but were not depositing the same with the Government exchequer. The company collected service tax from April 2010 onwards, but has not paid to the department. Total amount of service tax not paid from April 2010 to February, 2014 is Rs. 4.50 crore.

The managing director of the company, Myron John Remedios was involved in the day to day operations of the company and was fully aware of the service tax liability of the company. The department has been investigating the case against the company. Remedios was advised by the officials to pay the service tax collected by him. The department came to know about the continued service tax evasion by him, department immediately took strict action and arrested Remedios. He was produced before the Esplanade Court today where court has remanded him to judicial custody till March 24.

The action taken by the Department is in line with Government policy of Zero tolerance against the service tax evaders. The Government had recently come out with VCES Scheme but the tax evaders are not coming clean, therefore now, serious action will be taken. Recently the service tax department had arrested Mohammed Aslam Choudhary, of M/s Honest Security Service, Rohit Talwalkar, Director of M/s Talwarkars Fitness Solution Pvt. Ltd, Rajan Vasantkumar Dhruv of M/s. Orbit Enterprises, a builder company, Prakash S. Thevar of M/s Captain Facility Services Pvt.Ltd and Ashok Kotwani of M/s Ascho Niulab Industries Ltd for their role in huge amount of service tax evasion. The Department is also attaching bank accounts of various Companies who have not paid taxes on time.
