Rakesh Maria

FORMER Mumbai police commissioner and now Maharashtra’s Director General (Home Guards) Rakesh Maria and two other senior officials of the Mumbai police have been questioned by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Sheena Bora murder case. The two other officials identified as joint commissioner (Law and Order) Deven Bharti and zonal deputy police commissioner (DCP) Satya Narayan Chaudhary.

On Thursday CBI recorded statement of Maria, Bharti and Chaudhary. These officials had supervised the murder investigation after the crime was unearthed by the Khar police station. In the middle of the investigation Maria was replaced by Ahmed Javed as police commissioner. Maria’s direct handling of the day to day investigations cost him his position. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said that “all cases must get equal attention.”

CBI sources said Rakesh Maria had allegedly tried to protect Peter Mukerjea. In April 2012, Sheena Bora (25-year-old) was allegedly murdered and disposed of the body in a forest in Raigad district. According to CBI’s charge sheet, the murder was the fallout of a financial dispute in the family.

Peter Mukerjea was arrested by CBI in the case on November 19, 2015. Earlier, in August, 2015, the city police arrested Indrani Mukerjea, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her driver Shyamvar Rai.
