A woman has reportedly been killed and 16 others were injured in two bomb blasts in two coaches of Banglore-Guwahati Express at Chennai railway station on Thursday morning. The nature of the blast is yet to be ascertained.

According to railway officials the incident (blasts) took place around 7.15am on platform 9 in two bogies S4 and S5. The explosion took place as the train entered at the Chennai railway station.

Speaking to media, J K Tripthy, Chennai police commissioner said, “Several persons injured in a bomb explosion in a train at Chennai Railway station.”

“The blast took place under a seat and victim, named Swati (22), was sitting on the seat. She is native of Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), Swati, had boarded from Bangalore and was on her way to Vijaywada,” Rakesh Misra, General Manager, Southern Railway.

The injured have been shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General hospital.
