Two senior citizens died and four others were injured early on Sunday morning when a major fire broke out on the fifth floor of Gulmohar Building in Sundarvan society in Samta Nagar, Thane. The cause of the fire is not known.

According to fire brigade officials the fire was noticed at around 6.05 am in the 12-storeyed building. The building is located near Raymond company factory. Being a residential building, people rushed out of the building to escape.

Two senior citizens died and four others reported to injured. All the four injured have been admitted to the civil hospital in Thane. Firefighters rescued all residents trapped inside the building. The deceased senior citizen identified as Shivajirao Chougule (84) and his wife Nirmala (78), could not escape the flames and were charred to death. The deceased couple’s daughter Ranjana Save (50) and her son Vikramaditya escaped with minor burn injuries.

Ten fire tenders were rushed to douse the blaze. The police officials said the fire could not be controlled as the entire furniture, flooring and eve of the staircase connecting the duplex apartment was wooden.

The cause of fire is being investigated.
